Alimentum cooks up a great performance

2010 was a challenging year for Alimentum. A change of ownership caused concern in the marketplace but with the services of The Briefing Room retained by Chef Patron Mark Poynton and the new directors the restaurant has risen to new heights over the last 12 months. A rating in the Top 60 UK restaurants list in the 2011 Good Food Guide was probably the icing on the cake, but an improved year-on-year financial performance was probably more satisfying. All aspects of marketing are handled by The Briefing Room, from advertising and PR to Facebook and online profile – including website and search marketing campaigns. “The support we get from Chris takes a huge weight off my daily commitments, said Mark. We simply couldn’t achieve the coverage we get without Chris.”

Disposable Medical Instruments Ltd (DMI) is small business with big ambitions, as demonstrated by their appointment onto the new NHS Supply Chain Framework Agreement, making them one of only ten companies in the UK accredited to supply single use disposable medical equipment to NHS hospitals, surgeries and teaching hospitals.

The business was stared by Patrick Chaney and his partner Yvonne Valentine in response to the growing use of disposable instruments in the NHS is a direct result of healthcare providers seeking viable, cost-effective alternatives to reusable instruments and the associated central sterilization costs.  DMI Ltd can provide full traceability on all instruments and procedure packs, all individually sterilized and packed to ISO 13485 quality standards.

As a relatively new business in the marketplace Patrick and Yvonne have concentrated on developing an extensive portfolio of quality instruments, with successful direct selling allowing them to create a platform for growth. The NHS appointment encouraged them to seek external guidance on marketing matters and a Google search led to the initial contact with Chris Ellis at The Briefing Room.

Speaking about the projects that have been completed over the last 3 months Patrick said “We just didn’t have the time or expertise to address the marketing needs of the business. Our website, literature and exhibition materials have been aligned to the new branding and our messaging is coherent and consistent. Chris has worked strategically and tactically, driving conceptual work and supplying copy for web and print materials. Together we’ve delivered a great deal in short space of time and we certainly couldn’t have done it without Chris’s help. He has been a real asset to the business.”

The Briefing Room submits SEO Audit to FTSE 100 Company – and helps get Alimentum on page 1

The Briefing Room continues to develop its search engine optimisation (SEO) and search engine marketing (SEM) skills with two commissions from clients looking for a better return on website investments.

The first project involved a full SEO audit and scoping report for the fastest growing UK based FTSE 100 business with a range of divisional businesses running e-commerce operations. The report was submitted in the summer and implementation programs are now being resourced. Ongoing marketing support has also been commissioned from this new client of The Briefing Room.

At the other end of the corporate scale is a long-standing client which continues to out-perform its local competitors and its market sector in growth terms. Restaurant Alimentum has jumped to page 1 on Google for organic search results across key phrases, thanks to a redesign and optimisation program completed in September.

Google Adwords

At the other end of the corporate scale is a long-standing client which continues to out-perform its local competitors and its market sector in growth terms. Restaurant Alimentum has jumped to page 1 on Google for organic search results across key phrases, thanks to a redesign and optimisation program completed in September. Onsite optimisation involves making sure Google gets the information it wants, in the way it wants it, in order to rank the site and substantiate its content. This starts with ensuring the site is built correctly but relies heavily on good keyword analysis aligned to the search terms being used and the relevancy to the business. This led to the identification of viable words and phrases – with copy and SEO code from The Briefing Room’s Chris Ellis working to maximise keyword usage within the Google best practice guidelines.

Central to the SEM work for Alimentum is tactical paid search campaigns using Google Adwords. In addition, online press release submissions to vital news channels, including Google News, along with link strategies to build quality inbound links are contributing to building quality site traffic and good conversion rates.

Many businesses are still not using paid search effectively, when it represents the best route to page 1 nirvana and provides instant learning. Clients gain important insights around offers (and the testing of click-through rates using Adwords promotional variations), traffic flow metrics and visitor profiles. Organic improvements take time, commitment and a lot of hard work – and for some page 1 will never be achievable – making paid search the best route to the top. Some of the UK’s leading brands are actively spending six figure sums on paid search every month and are achieving returns of 10 and above, in some cases, for every pound spent.

The Briefing Room pulls it together for Screens & Graphics Ltd.

Screens & Graphics Ltd have been valued suppliers to many of the top local businesses in the science, technology, hi-fi, aerospace and product fabrication sectors for nearly 40 years. There reputation has been built on fabulous service, a "can-do" attitude to tricky screen print challenges and their consistent embrace of new technology and techniques in digital printing.

But like many small businesses with no dedicated marketing resource, the task of aligning their new company identity with a website that told their story in a creative, compelling and distinctive manner was marooned on the hectic shores of everyday production deadlines, with wave after wave of rush jobs, paperwork backlogs and client meetings pounding the project back to shore each time the coast seemed clear.

In July this year Managing Director Jay Lewis called in the services of Chris Ellis at The Briefing Room to take ownership of the project and steer the website delivery on to completion.

With a clear vision of how the website could be aligned to the newly created branding, The Briefing Room sought confirmation of internal perceptions with in-depth research from client research. Interviews were conducted with current, old and lapsed clients to identify gaps between the claims of the S&G team and the real-world experiences of the customers.

On top of that, the new website needed to convey all aspects of the S&G operation, from traditional screen printing to new digital techniques - including unique hybrid printing techniques combining specialist screen and digital print solutions, ideal for prototyping and short run call-offs.

The creative brief was issued to the web design team Cubiq Design, along with new copy and search engine code content written by Chris Ellis and batch of newly commissioned images by photographer Marcus Barnes. Ongoing project management and art direction from The Briefing Room allowed the Screens & Graphics website to glide successfully down the slipway, out into the open waters of the world wide web on October 1st.

Screens & Graphics have what they would never have found the time to deliver; whilst customers old, new and soon to be united by Google searches have a website flying an on-brand flag of a cracking business, focused entirely on delivering quality and service to appreciative clients.

And in the words of Mr Lewis the Managing Director, "I love it!"

So much so, that the route to even more new customers via  integrated marketing campaigns is already being charted.

Alimentum Jazz

We have successfully introduced the Jazz Club format and attracted new customers to the restaurant. The promise of affordable fine-dining and world-class jazz thrown in free is a quality proposition and the delivery does not disappoint.

The affect on Tuesday night trade has been dramatic to say the least and the success has encouraged us to develop the Jazz Club into regular 12-week runs – Season 3 is currently running up until July 31st.

I am particularly pleased for Chris Ellis, our Marketing Consultant, who has conceived and managed the execution of the integrated marketing campaigns with press, web, direct mail and PR coverage instrumental to the success of the Jazz Club initiative. “Chris was instrumental in the creation of the Amara brand four years ago and remains one of my closest advisors, commented Andy Hood, Amara MD. His judgement and wise council have helped transform our online offering, maintaining the integrity of the brand throughout. He is never afraid to challenge our thinking and offers clarity around brand communications issues we get far too close to. As many other clients do too, I’m sure. Chris also recommended the services of Outplay Media and Dynamic Creative to make up the project team responsible for the migration from the old site to the new. As usual, his choices proved to be on the money.” added Andy.

InsightNow gets timely marketing support

The Briefing Room has spent the summer providing hands-on brand management support to the board of InsightNow, a new company pioneering improvements in customer experience through engagement, unique 360° insight and innovative management techniques.

Their proprietary technology is currently being trialed in UK, South African and Indian contact centres by major brand owners looking to improve agent performance through minimal management intervention.

The Briefing Room was approached to project manage marketing activity spanning core messaging and communication pillars, through to marketing communications collateral including exhibition materials, web site, advertising and literature.

Neil Sharp, InsightNow Managing Director commented, “We are expanding quickly and our focus is on delivering outstanding results with clients on an operational level. I didn’t want to run the risk of neglecting brand development and marketing communications but, equally, wasn’t ready to employ a marketing director. Chris has provided all the skills, knowledge and resource management required and hence, is now filling that role on a contract basis and we no longer see the need to recruit. Quite simply, Chris’ safe pair of hands has allowed us to drive the business forward at a critical stage in our development.”

New retail packaging for Timestrip plc

Hitchin based Timestrip Plc, which develops and markets unique label technologies, recently benefited from appointing The Briefing Room to handle the design of new retail packaging for the revolutionary Timestrip® food labels, now on trial in selected John Lewis department stores.

Under pressure to meet production deadlines, CEO Reuben Isbitsky called in The Briefing Room to project manage activities, starting with a refined consumer proposition and culminating in new range graphics for the existing clam shell packaging.

Timestrip® labels address the confusion caused by the multiple time factors affecting when products should be used or consumed by.

With this in mind, The Briefing Room created a clearer, more focused on-pack proposition, both visually and textually by using the phrase ‘take the guesswork out of food freshness’ across the fridge, freezer and cupboard ranges. Serving suggesting imagery conveys a better, fresher eating experience using appropriate foodstuffs.

Commenting on the input provided by The Briefing Room, Reuben Isbitsky said: “Chris and his team have provided invaluable outsourced skills, delivering stronger pack designs with minimum hand-holding and maximum professionalism. We are delighted with the new results and the refinement of our consumer proposition.”

A strange but true book launch for the Workplace Law Group

The sales and marketing campaign behind the launch of a unique new book in the vain of ‘Does anything eat wasps?’ has been delivered by The Briefing Room Ltd.

Strange, unexpected, but 100% real, Dodging Bullets: advice for employers on tricky legal situations reveals the answers to the legal questions you’d never imagine you’d need to ask.

Collated from the popular Workplace Law Network forum and online advice services, this humorous yet extensively informative book brings together the most surprising, entertaining and intricate of queries from employers in the areas of HR and employment law, health and safety, and premises management.

Despite the tricky and unusual nature of the questions, Dodging Bullets responds with a depth of knowledge and experience from a panel of good-humoured lawyers and consultants who are no strangers to the complexities of workplace law.

A unique, fascinating, light-hearted yet serious read for anyone who’s ever employed people – or wished they didn’t have to!

The campaign combines highly targeted PR activity to trade and consumer press, broadcast media, online communities, retail buyers and industry leaders; supported by the development of new relationships with major high street book retailers.

The book has also has it’s own microsite: www.dodgingbullets.co.uk complete with radio interview download, forum and e-shop functionality.

The ring-fenced project encompasses planning, database development, email campaigns, direct mail, copy writing, press sell-in and interview activities, establishing new retail distribution contracts, retail promotions and PR support.

Briefing Room MD Chris Ellis observes, “Thank heavens for the Workplace Law team and their extended family of experts who find the time to provide the sanity and clarity required to make some sense of the nonsense workplace managers struggle to deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Having become part of that extended family myself, working closely with Sales and Marketing Director Ben Daft and Publisher Kelly Mansfield, I’ve seen first hand the passion and shear hard work that goes in to making the Workplace Law Network such a valuable and valued community.

This book should be on every workplace managers Christmas list and I’d bet more than a few quid that these questions and answers will provide a rich seem of new material for ‘expert’ and ‘celebrity’ after-dinner speakers for years to come.

At only £9.99 including postage, you should set your sights on www.dodgingbullets.co.uk and order a copy today.”

Commenting on the input provided by The Briefing Room, Workplace Law Group Marketing and Sales Director Ben Daft said: “Chris has worked with Workplace Law on a number of projects and has made solid inroads in the promotion of our latest book, Dodging Bullets. Starting from scratch on a media database was not an easy challenge, but Chris has developed relationships with industry press, broadcast media and national bookshop distributors with a view to taking this product to the main stream consumer. Chris has even acted as spokesman on behalf of Workplace Law in radio interviews to promote this unique book.”

Tier2 Consulting appointment

Stevenage based Tier2 Consulting has appointed The Briefing Room Ltd to provide ongoing marketing communications support with a remit to leverage the brand attributes, sharpen the sales messaging and managing the brand across online and offline collateral.

The process kicked off with internal workshops designed to help the consultants understand and appreciate their superior technical skills and operational conduct and the many reasons why they are chosen ahead of the competition.

A new e-bulletin will be hitting browsers next week carrying this new found self-belief with a much more appropriate tone of voice and a clearer proposition.

Briefing Room MD Chris Ellis states, brands are about attitude and behaviour – particularly service sector brands where people and personal selling matched by consistent delivery win the day. Tier2 Consulting recognises the need to get on the front foot and will be aiming to land some knock-out new business wins over the coming months.

Commenting on the input provided by The Briefing Room, Tier2 Managing Director Andy Kennedy said: “Chris delivers relevant marketing advice and incisive brand communications from an informed standpoint. He understands our business and I appreciate not being offered generalised, off-the-shelf marketing theory.”

Visionary messaging for Cambridge Display Technology (CDT)

Distilling business, technological and consumer advantages into a global strapline can be a daunting task – particularly when the needs of a market and the technological performances being demanded are evolving on a daily basis.

The benefit of having one overarching proposition expressed, where appropriate, as a strapline allows room for the various levels of technology specific sub-messaging to operate with greater meaning and provide the necessary ‘reasons to believe’.

CDT recognised the advantage of develop a top-line proposition around its corporate and technological excellence, one which the company as a whole could fall in behind.

CDT Marketing Director Terry Nicklin and The Briefing Room MD Chris Ellis worked through a positioning framework process to arrive at a statement that encapsulated the superior qualities of the CDT display screen technology matched by the ambition of the business.

‘Vision in our chemistry’ is now being rolled out tactically across marketing communications globally, and was unveiled earlier in the year at the industry’s main event – The SID Expo in America.

Commenting on the new strapline, Terry Nicklin said: “Having worked with Chris previously, we knew that The Briefing Room would apply its creative skills and work with us to develop an ‘umbrella’ campaign which we could apply to current tactical marketing activities. We were delighted with the result.”
